Washington State Intermediate License Traffic Ticket Consequences

One of the best days of a teenager’s life is the day they first get their driver’s license. It is a symbol of adulthood, freedom, and growing responsibility. It can also be a huge help to a family as now the teenager can drive themselves to school, run errands, and take a more active role in the day-to-life of the family. However, even one Washington traffic ticket can change all of that.

Drivers are eligible to obtain a driver’s license at age 16, but until they reach 18 it is considered an “intermediate license.” For six months these driver’s cannot have passengers in the car under 20 years of age, unless they are direct

family members. For six subsequent months they can have non-family members in the car, but not more than three who are under 20 years of age. They are also restricted from driving between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless someone in the car is 25 years of age or older.

If the Washington intermediate license holder can go one year without receiving a Washington State speeding ticket or other traffic ticket, the restrictions are lifted. However, there are severe consequences if an intermediate license holder gets cited with a WA traffic ticket, or violates the restrictions placed on the license.

A first offense results in a warning letter. A second infraction causes the driver to lose their license for six months. A third ticket means the license is suspended until the driver turns 18. An accident will also result in losing the license until they are 18 years old if they were cited for the accident, and even NEITHER PARTY receives a Washington ticket.

In cases involving traffic crimes, such as a DUI, the license is also suspended until the driver is 18 years old. None of these facts take into consideration that insurance premiums for teenagers is already high, and that even one traffic infraction conviction will almost certainly lead to exorbitantly higher rates. These serious marks against a young person’s driving record could also adversely affect their ability to get a job out of high school and into their adult life.

For these reasons, it makes sense to fight even one Washington intermediate license traffic ticket. A Washington speeding ticket conviction could mean all sorts of problems for a teenager just starting out in life. This is why it makes sense to retain a qualified Washington traffic ticket attorney who will aggressively fight to have your ticket dismissed.
